As you may know already, friend have a big family - the wife and I plus six Rugrats. Plus a cat and a dog. We can spend a lot of food. Groceries (with rental and car and gas) are one of our biggest expenses. I refer both to our budget that I can to the grocery store, simply because I want to make sure that we are never short of food. Also, cooking our own food is so much less expensive than restoration.

And as I figure that most of my readers, if they have large families or not, go to the supermarket now and then, I thought I pass along some of my advice. Not all my stuff - I've picked up over the years, dozens of magazines, books and websites. But it is the best among them, and some that I made myself.

Then choose from the above, which I hope will be useful to you and your family:
1. Always start with a list. If you go without a list, you May as well just your money. Better yet, give it to me - I probably need more than you. :) Seriously, if you need to establish a list of everything you need, making each week from your menu (next tip) and control to ensure that you have not in your custody pantry, fridge or freezer. Make sure not to forget something. Now stick to that list.

2. Plan a weekly menu. This is the best way to ensure that your list is complete and you have enough of your family to dinner this week. I often plan a weekly menu, then double for next week - that way I can shop for two weeks at a time. Make sure you plan the rest of the night.

3. Do not go when you're hungry. This is a tip, but it's true: when you're hungry, you want to buy all kinds of waste. You will end up spending much more. Eat a good meal first, and you'll have more chances to stick to your list.

4. At a budget. When I go to the store, I know exactly how I can spend. Can I do my best to stick within that limit. If you do not know how much you can spend, you will probably spend too much.

5. Make a rough calculation operation. On the tip over if you want to stay within your budget, you better know where you are. Then, when you can see you will go over it, you can decide if you really need that 10 lbs. good box good. I keep a count on my grocery list, right round so that I can make a few quick calculations. An item costs $ 1.85? I say $ 2. Then I do not need a calculator or all of complex mathematics.

6. Keep a list on your fridge, and write things immediately. When you miss something, do not leave your memory. Write it down immediately, and you will never have to run to the bank because you have no eggs.

7. Make a list of pantry. Make a list of everything you normally stock in your pantry. Keep it on the pantry. Put a slash next to each item for the number of items you have (if you have two cans of stewed tomatoes, put two slashes). Then, when you use something, turn the slash into an X. This makes it much easier when it comes to your list.

8. Keep things in stock quick-n-easy meals. Easy meals for us, maybe spaghetti or mac-n-cheese or a small sauté. We have always had the ingredients on hand so that we can quickly whip something when we're feeling lazy.

9. Buy in bulk when it makes sense. If you can save money during a month or two, by buying in bulk, to do so. But make sure you're going to serve first and foremost, it is bad - it is not cheaper to buy in bulk, if you're not using it.

10. Keep your receipts and enter into a spreadsheet. This will be your price list. Use it if you know when the sale in bulk or are a good deal. It is also a great way to compare prices between stores - buy your goods in cooking, but a fruit shop in your store B. The spreadsheet can also serve as a checklist to use when you compile your shopping list.

11. Buy frozen vegetables. While the vegetables are a little better, frozen vegetables are almost as good and much better than nothing. And since you can keep them in the freezer, they rarely go bad.

12. When you're down, write it. Do not wait until you miss. when you see there were only three rolls of toilet paper left, put on your list. Because when you run it will be too late. :)

13. Cut back on meat. Meat is expensive. We have vegetarian meals several times a week (think pasta or chili) and for other meals, you could use a little meat as a seasoning instead of the main ingredient - think Asian, Indian and other cultural foods. In fact, I eat vegetarian all the time, but the wife and children do a little of each.

14. Pack your lunch snacks. Buying pre-snacks practical, but a big waste of money. Buy little bags and buy snacks in bulk, then it only takes a few minutes to pack some snacks for lunch every day.

15. Take leftovers for lunch. Plan to cook a little more at each meal, so you have the remains of meals for children and meals. Pack immediately after dinner, so you do not need to worry about this in the morning.

16. Cook a lot, then freeze. Alternatively, you can cook a whole mess of spaghetti (for example) and freeze for several dinners. A good idea is to use a Sunday and cook for one week (or even a month) worth of dinners. Plan 5-6 dinners freezer and cook them all at once.

17. Always have batteries, toilet paper and light bulbs. And other needs that you always seem to fail to - buy a lot when they are on sale, or buy in bulk. Remember to check to see if you have these items before going to the store.

18. Try crock pot dinners. We found these in the last year, and they are easy and cheap and tasty. Cut a strip of ingredients, throw them in the pot in the morning, and dinner ready for you when you arrive home. Perhaps nothing more perfect than that? I suggest that this is not.

19. Clip coupons. I know that sometimes they seem too much trouble. But this is not really difficult to clip a few good and throw in a coupon envelope to take to your grocery trip. And you can save 10-20% of your results with coupons. Check store entrances, newspapers and flyers for coupons.

20. Only use coupons for items planning, you were already buying. Do not let them trick you into buying something that is not on your list, just to "save" money.

21. Look for promotions. Each store has special. Be sure to look in the newspaper, or when you arrive at the store (they often Unadvertised special - look at the upper and lower shelves for deals). Do not buy unless they are things that you always use.

22. Try brands. The brands are often better than generics, and you pay for all the advertising they do for a brand name. Give the store brand a try, and often you will not see the difference. Especially if it is an ingredient in a dish where you can not taste the quality of the individual ingredient.

23. Cut your "question" of travel. The waste gas, and almost inevitably, you buy more than one point. If you plan ahead, make a weekly menu and shop with a list, which should reduce the number of trips you make for a small number of points. But if you are still short a few items, analyze the reason - not to get a good list, did you forget some items from your list? Action on the things you often.

24. Sugar cereals are a bad purchase. A lot of money just to nutrition. Look for whole grain cereals with low sugar content. Add fruit for better flavor.

25. Be watchful at the register. Keep an eye on the scanner - you keep the body on its toes, and take the wrong ones.

26. When there is a sale, stock up. Outlets can be many things. If it is a question that you normally use, buy a handful of them.

27. Comparison shop. Look at the different brands of a certain type of product, including trademarks. Sometimes there will be a significant difference. Make sure you compare apples to apples - you need to divide the price by the amount (ounces, pounds, etc) to get the same unit price.

28. Go during slow times. One of my favorite moments of the shop is the end of the night. But during working hours and other peak times is good too. Avoid right after 5 pm on payday and close to major holidays.

29. Know when stocks his store of fruits and vegetables. In my region, which makes a big difference. Fruits and vegetables may spoil quickly because they must be shipped. So I know that the store re-stocks on Thursday, so I usually Thursday or Friday, if I get the old items.

30. Plan a trip a month for bulk staples. You can get new items in another store on other weeks, but make a big trip in bulk to reduce costs and the amount you have to do for the other three weeks. Avoid buying on impulse at the largest shop too - simply because they sell a lot does not mean you're saving if you do not plan to buy it first.

31. Avoid trips to the retail store. Or the gas station! These are some of the most expensive stores. (Rank up to the airport stores.)

32. Try cooperatives. It is often possible to save a lot of money to these types of places of staples.

33. Consider shopping in two stores. There is not a store with a monopoly on savings. Everyone has a saving on various articles on different days. You can switch between the two stores in two weeks.

34. Think freezer. If you want to save, you'll need a big freezer. Ask around - someone you know may have a new model, they do not need more. You can use freezer to store meat, frozen vegetables and other commodities, and freeze large batches of pasta, casseroles, and other dinners you prepare in advance.

35. Use all possible. You have a bunch of leftover ingredients (half of an onion, a little tomato, some pasta, some other vegetables?) ... Combine them for a quick meal, so they do not go to waste before your next grocery trip. The more you can stretch the food, and less waste than you, you spend less in the long term.

36. Do not waste leftovers. Have a list on your fridge that the remains are in place so as not to forget them. Plan a leftover night or two, if you're sure to eat them all. Put them immediately for lunch, so they are ready to take the next morning.

37. Do not buy junk food (or buy the least possible). Junk food not only costs a lot of money to zero for the nutrition, but it makes you and your family, fat and kills you. Speaking of a bad deal! Choose fruits and vegetables instead.

38. Rain check. If an item is on sale but the store has more stock, to request a rain check.

39. Go when the kids are at school. When you bring your children, they will harass and pester you until you buy a kind of junk food. Even if you are able to stick to your guns, this is not pleasant to say no 10 million times. In most cases you will save money shopping without children.

40. Go for the food. The treatment does not occur in nature and nutrition will allow you fat. Look for things in their least processed products - whole grain instead of white or wheat bread, fresh fruit instead of canned or fruit juice, whole grain cereals or oatmeal instead all other types of cereals. You have the idea.

41. Read the labels. Look for trans fats, hydrogenated oils, large quantities of sugar, saturated fat, lots of sodium, cholesterol. Then avoid them like the plague. Look instead for fiber, good fats, proteins, vitamins, calcium.

42. Clean your refrigerator. You stuff more, it turns solid and liquid. The remains have begun to organize their own political party. Toss em out and make room for new ones.

43. Stick to your list. Avoid impulse purchases. They are almost always bad, and even just a few dollars, they will add $ 50-100 for a trip. During a year, which could mean thousands of people. Tell yourself you can not buy anything not on your list, unless it is absolutely necessary (why is not the toilet paper on my list is sublime).

44. Use store savings cards. You can add to significant savings over the long term.

45. Cut your food restaurant. It is never cheaper or more nutritious than eating at home. Plan your meals (see above point) and your lunches and save a ton of money.

46. Avoid frozen dinners or prepared meals. Again, these costs and more are usually much less nutritious.

47. Drink water. If you regularly drink iced tea, Tang, sodas or other beverages, those who are not cut off completely and just drink water. It is much better for you, and much less expensive.

48. Prepare your grocery list by aisle. If you regularly shop at the same store, organize your list so you can easily find and check off items as you walk down the aisle. We always shop from right to left, so we're not constantly running back and in the store.

49. Getting grocery bags fabric. You'll save tons of plastic over time, and help the environment enormously.

50. Pack healthy snacks for children. Whole wheat crackers, popcorn, cut-up fruit, raisins, and other kid-friendly snacks are much better than advertising often seen in children meals. And cheaper.
